Office Affairs in India: Why They Happen and What They Can Cost You

Ask counsellors where affairs begin and the answer is nearly always the same: work. You spend more waking hours with colleagues than with your spouse, you see each other at your most competent, and you share a world your partner at home does not. That combination is powerful.

Why the office makes it likely

• Proximity and repetition. Familiarity breeds attraction; psychologists call it the mere-exposure effect.
• Shared stress. A launch, an audit, a bad manager. Surviving something together bonds people fast.
• Your best self. At work you are sharp, dressed, respected. At home you are tired and arguing about the electricity bill.
