In Love With a Married Man: What Is Actually Happening, and What Comes Next

Falling for a married man, or a married woman, is common and rarely planned. An honest guide to what the feeling is, what usually happens next, and how to protect yourself.

Nobody sets out to fall for someone who is married. It usually starts somewhere ordinary — an office, a gym, a parents' WhatsApp group, a friend of a friend — and by the time you notice what is happening, it has already happened. If that is where you are, this is not a lecture. It is what tends to happen next, so you can decide with your eyes open.

Why it happens more than people admit

Married people are often the most attentive people in a room. They are not performing for a first date, they are not in a hurry, and they have usually learned how to listen. That feels rare, and it is attractive.

There is also the pull of the unavailable. Psychologists call it the scarcity effect: what we cannot fully have, we value more. Stolen time feels more precious than ordinary time. None of this means the feeling is fake. It means the feeling is being amplified by the situation, and it is worth knowing that.

The questions that actually matter

Forget "does he love me" for a moment. These tell you more:

  • What has he said about his marriage, and what has he done? "We are basically separated" and "we still live together, go on holidays, and nobody knows" are different situations. Watch what happens, not what is promised.
  • Who carries the risk? If the secrecy protects him and costs you — your weekends, your festivals, your ability to tell anyone — that imbalance will grow, not shrink.
  • What do you want in two years? If the honest answer is "him, openly", ask whether anything in the last six months is moving in that direction.

What usually happens

There is no reliable Indian data on how these relationships end, and anyone quoting a precise percentage is guessing. What counsellors describe consistently is this: most married people in an affair do not leave their marriage. Children, family, money, and the social cost of divorce in India are real, and they weigh more over time, not less. Some do leave. Most say they will and then don't.

That is not a verdict on you or on the feeling. It is the base rate, and you deserve to know it before you plan around the exception. More on timelines: how long affairs last.

If it is the other way round: in love with a married woman

Most of the above applies, with one difference: in India the social cost of discovery usually falls harder on her. Family pressure, financial dependence, and custody fears are heavier. If you care about her, the most useful thing you can do is protect her privacy completely — no photos, no messages that could be read over a shoulder, no pressure to decide on your timeline.

Protecting yourself

  1. Keep your own life. Friends, work, weekends that are not built around when he is free.
  2. Never send an identifiable photo. Relationships that end badly are where blackmail starts. If it happens: what to do if you are being blackmailed.
  3. Set a date to review, not a deadline to give him. Ask yourself, not him, in six months: is this still good for me?
  4. Talk to someone. A counsellor, not the group chat. Tele-MANAS is free and confidential: 14416.

Is it illegal?

No. Adultery stopped being a crime in India on 27 September 2018 (Joseph Shine v. Union of India). It can still be a ground for divorce for his spouse, and you can be named in those proceedings. Details: is an extramarital affair legal in India.

If you want to end it

You are allowed to walk away from something that still feels good because it is not good for you. It will hurt more than a normal breakup, because you cannot grieve it in public. That is expected and it passes. A practical guide: how to end an affair.
