How to Get Over Someone Who Is Married: A Realistic Guide

Ending things with a married partner, or being left by one, hurts in a way you cannot talk about. A practical, kind guide to getting through it — and a Hinglish short version.

The end of an affair is a strange grief. You lost something real, and you cannot say so. No friends bringing food, no one asking how you are doing, and often you still see their name, their status, sometimes their face at work. This is a guide for getting through it.

Why it hurts this much

Secrecy intensifies everything — the highs while it lasted, and the loss after. Researchers call unacknowledged loss disenfranchised grief: grief that society does not recognise, so you carry it alone. Knowing the name does not fix it, but it helps to know you are not overreacting.

What actually helps

  1. No contact, done properly. Mute, archive, remove from close friends. Not block-in-anger-then-unblock-at-2-am. A clean distance, decided once.
  2. Delete the evidence — for both of you. Chats and photos are a risk to them and a trap for you. Keep nothing you would re-read at midnight.
  3. Tell one safe person. A counsellor, or a single friend who will not judge and does not know them. Carrying it completely alone makes it last longer.
  4. Refill the hours. The time they used to occupy — the late-night calls, the lunch breaks — will feel like holes. Plan something into exactly those slots for a few weeks.
  5. Expect the relapse urge around day 10–20. It is normal, and it passes. Write down why it ended before it arrives, and read that instead of messaging.
  6. Watch the story you tell yourself. "They would have left if I was enough" is almost never the real reason. Most married people in affairs do not leave, for reasons that have little to do with the other person.

If you are the married one

You are allowed to grieve too, even if you ended it and even if it was the right choice. Grieving it silently at home is its own kind of heavy. Counselling helps, and it can be individual — you do not need to disclose anything to anyone else. If you are trying to rebuild the marriage: can a marriage survive an affair.

Short version, Hinglish mein

Contact band kijiye — ek baar, saaf tarike se. Purani chats aur photos delete kar dijiye, dono ki safety ke liye. Ek bharosemand insaan se baat kijiye. Jo samay unke saath jaata tha, us mein kuch aur bhar dijiye. 2–3 hafte mein message karne ka mann karega — ye normal hai, guzar jaayega. Aur agar bahut bhari lage, Tele-MANAS 14416 par free baat kar sakte hain.

If anyone threatens you after it ends

Threatening to expose someone for money or favours is extortion (BNS Section 308). Do not pay. Call 1930 or file at cybercrime.gov.in: full guide.
