Dating App Bill Scam: How the Cafe and Club Trap Works

You match with someone friendly. The chat is easy, a little flattering, and within a day or two they suggest meeting — at a particular cafe, lounge or club they "love". You arrive, they order generously, and then the bill lands: many times what you expected. When you question it, the mood changes. Staff close in. Somebody mentions the police, or your family, or a video.

That is the dating app bill scam. It is one of the oldest meeting traps, and it is still working in 2026.

A case from this week: Ghaziabad

On 25 September 2026, Ghaziabad police's crime branch said it had busted a gang running this exact scheme from a club in the city's Raj Nagar (RDC) area, according to Aaj Tak and ETV Bharat. As police described it:

• Fake women's profiles were created on dating apps to befriend men.
• After chatting, the men were invited to the club.
• Expensive food, alcohol and hookah were ordered, and the bills were inflated far beyond the real cost.
• Men who hesitated to pay were threatened, including with videos.
• Four people were arrested; police said the club had been operating this way for about a month and they were still working out how many victims there were.

The details differ from city to city, but the shape is always the same.

How the trap works, step by step

1. The match. An attractive profile, often with polished or AI-looking photos, that responds quickly and warmly.
2. Fast escalation. Little interest in who you are, lots of interest in meeting soon.
3. The venue is theirs. A specific place, usually one you have never heard of, sometimes in a building with little foot traffic. Suggest somewhere else and they have an excuse.
4. The ordering. Premium drinks, bottles, platters, hookah — often without a menu with prices in front of you.
5. The bill. Inflated, sometimes with items you never saw. Your date may leave for "the washroom" or a "phone call".
6. The pressure. Staff or "managers" block the exit, raise voices, threaten to call the police or your family, or hint at photos and videos. Married men are pushed hardest, because the threat of exposure feels biggest.

A 2026 McAfee survey reported by India Today Hindi found that one in seven Indian respondents said they had lost money to online dating or romance fraud. Coverage of that survey in India News specifically flagged the restaurant-bill trick. Bill scams are just the in-person version.

Red flags before you go

• They insist on the venue and resist every alternative you suggest.
• The venue has few reviews, recent reviews mentioning "bill", "fraud" or "bouncers", or no clear menu prices online.
• They avoid a video call before meeting.
• They want to meet very soon, often the same day or late in the evening.
• They ask what you do and what car you drive more than anything about you as a person.
• They say a friend "might join".

How to avoid it: five simple rules

1. Pick your own venue. A busy, well-known cafe you have been to, with prices on the menu. If someone refuses every reasonable public place you suggest, you have your answer.
2. Video call first. Two minutes is enough to confirm the person is real and matches the photos.
3. Look at the menu before ordering, and order for yourself.
4. Pay your own share, or split as you go. Keep it light: "Let's split, I insist." It removes the whole scam.
5. Tell a friend where you are and share your live location for the evening.

If you are already trapped

Your safety comes first; money can often be recovered later, you cannot.

• Stay calm and stay in the public area. Do not go into a back office.
• Call 112 if you are being threatened, blocked from leaving, or touched. Say clearly that you are being forced to pay an inflated bill.
• Ask for an itemised, printed bill and photograph it, along with the menu, the venue name and the entrance.
• If you pay under pressure, pay by card or UPI, not cash. It leaves a record of who received the money.
• Leave, then call your bank the same night. Report it as a fraudulent or disputed transaction and ask what dispute or chargeback options apply to your card.
• Report on 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in if the trap started online, as this did. Keep the dating profile and chat screenshots.
• File a police complaint at the local station with the bill, payment record and screenshots. Other victims of the same venue may already have complained.

If they threaten to expose you

Being on a dating app is not a crime, and neither is adultery — the Supreme Court decriminalised it in Joseph Shine v. Union of India (2018). Demanding money with threats is: extortion is an offence under Section 308 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), criminal intimidation under Section 351, and cheating under Section 318. Why this happens less on a match-first app

Bill scams depend on fake profiles and on quickly moving you somewhere the scammer controls.
