Are Extramarital Dating Apps Safe? An Honest Answer (India)

The real risks of extramarital dating apps in India, what face and ID verification can and cannot tell you, and a privacy checklist to test any app.

The honest answer is: safer than they used to be, never fully safe, and the difference between apps is large. "Safe" is not one property. It is five separate risks, and an app can handle some of them well and others badly. This guide separates them, explains what verification actually proves, and gives you a checklist you can use on any app — including ours.

The five real risks

1. A data breach

Everything you give an app can leak, however careful the app is. The textbook case is Ashley Madison: in 2015 hackers published profile, account and billing information for more than 36 million users, and the operators later settled US Federal Trade Commission and state charges for $1.6 million (FTC). It is not only history. In January 2026 Match Group confirmed a security incident affecting "a limited amount of user data" after the ShinyHunters group claimed records from Hinge, Match and OkCupid; the company said there was no indication that log-in credentials, financial information or private communications were accessed (BleepingComputer). More on this in what to do after a dating-app data breach.

2. Blackmail

For married users this is the risk that matters most, because the threat ("I will tell your spouse") works even when nothing illegal has happened. The usual pattern, described by the government's ISEA awareness programme, is fast intimacy, a video call that gets recorded, then a demand. If it happens: do not pay, keep the evidence, and report on 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in. Full steps: being blackmailed — what to do.

3. Fake profiles

Fake profiles are the raw material for most scams. In August 2026 Patiala police arrested six people who, according to The Tribune, used fake profiles on Tinder, Facebook and Bumble to lure men over 50 to meetings, followed by a staged "police raid" and an extortion demand. Regulators have noticed the category too: in April 2026 the National Human Rights Commission issued a notice to MeitY over Gleeden, citing "fake identities, risks of exploitation of women, and possible access by underage users" (Global Dating Insights).

4. Being recognised

The most common way people are found out has nothing to do with hackers. A colleague, neighbour or relative scrolls past a clear face photo. Any app that shows your photo to everyone who opens it makes this a matter of time in a city where you have lived for years.

5. The payment trail

Subscriptions leave a monthly line on a card or UPI statement, a renewal email, and sometimes an app-store receipt on a shared family account. A "discreet billing name" reduces the problem; not paying at all removes it.

What verification can and cannot tell you

Verification has become the standard answer to fake profiles. In October 2025 Tinder made its video-selfie Face Check mandatory for all new users in India; it uses liveness checks to confirm the face matches the profile photos and is not being used across multiple accounts (Global Dating Insights). That is genuinely useful. But be precise about what the different levels prove:

CheckWhat it provesWhat it does not prove
Photo or face check (selfie vs photos)A live human who looks like the photosName, age, identity
Government ID + live selfieA real, identifiable adult matching the IDMarital status, intentions, behaviour
Human review of the aboveA person, not only an algorithm, looked at itCriminal record or past behaviour

No verification tells you whether someone is honest, kind, single or married, or safe to meet alone. It raises the cost of running fake accounts at scale. It does not replace your own judgement. Read the first-meeting safety checklist before meeting anyone.

Privacy checklist: test any app in ten minutes

  1. Are photos hidden from strangers? Ideally masked on the server, not a blur effect that can be removed in a browser.
  2. Can people share phone numbers in chat? An app that lets numbers through is an app that pushes you to WhatsApp, where you have no report button and your real name and photo show.
  3. Who can message you? Mutual-match-only chat stops cold approaches and most scam scripts.
  4. What does it store about you? Real name, card details, contacts, precise location? Every item is something that can leak.
  5. Is deletion real, and free? Read what the privacy policy says remains after you delete.
  6. Is there a named Grievance Officer? Rule 3(2)(a) of the IT Rules, 2021 requires intermediaries to prominently publish the name and contact details of their Grievance Officer and how to complain (Indian Kanoon), and to acknowledge complaints within 24 hours (AZB & Partners). Since the February 2026 amendment, general grievances must be resolved within seven days, and complaints about intimate or morphed images of a person must be acted on within two hours (Freshfields). If an app has no reachable grievance contact, you have nowhere to go when something goes wrong.
  7. Are AI or staff-run accounts labelled? If the app will not say, assume some are not real.
  8. What will appear on a statement? And does it auto-renew?

How Parda handles these

We run Parda, so apply the checklist to us too. What we actually do:

  • Photos are masked server-side until you match.
  • Chat opens only after a mutual like, and phone numbers, emails and social handles are stripped from messages. There is no contact-reveal button.
  • No real names are shown. Your legal name is used once, for the ID check.
  • Every profile is ID-checked by a person: government photo ID plus a live camera selfie (three frames, no upload option). This does not check marital status, criminal record or behaviour.
  • It is free. No plans, no card on file, so no payment trail.
  • AI chat companions are labelled AI and never counted as members.

The short version

An extramarital dating app is as safe as the least careful thing you do on it. Choose an app that collects little, hides your face, keeps chat inside the app and checks identities with a human. Then do your part: no identifiable intimate images, no moving to WhatsApp early, no money to anyone, and a public place for a first meeting.
